Sharp-snouted Rock Lizard (Lacerta oxycephala)

Lastovo and its gorgeous lizards

Lastovo, also known in Italian with the ancient name of “Langosta”, is one of the most outer island of Dalmatian arcipelago, in Croatia, and, because of its size and position (about 55 km far from Croatian mainland, but also 110 km far from the Italian coast), it has rather limitated biodiversity, but also some insular specialities: what I’ve found interesting were particularly reptiles, with some gorgeous colourful morphs.

I haven’t been on the island not in the best time of the year to find animals, because I visited the island in July, probably in the warmest part of the year, but anyway, during my 3 days on the island, I found quite a few things:

Mammals

  • European Free-tailed Bat (Tadarina teniotis): 1 individual heard by night in Zaklopatica

Birds

  • Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus): 1 male in the fields close Lastovo village
  • Scopoli’s Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea): 6-10 individuals offshore Lastovo
  • Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii): 1 individual offshore Lastovo
  • European Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus): 1 individual in Lastovo village
  • Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo): 1 on the mount Hum
  • Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus): 1 on the mount Hum
  • Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus): 1 individual in the fields close Lastovo village
  • Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis): some individuals daily
  • European Scops Owl (Otus scops): at least 3 in song by night close Lastovo village
  • Common Swift (Apus apus): 3 individuals in Pasadur
  • Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica): some individuals in Lastovo village
  • Common House Martin (Delichon urbicum): some individuals in Lastovo village
  • Common Blackbird (Turdus merula): some individuals in the fields close Lastovo village
  • Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla): some individuals in Lastovo village
  • Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala): some individuals in the fields close Lastovo village
  • Eastern Subalpien Warbler (Sylvia cantillans albistriata): some individuals in the fields close Lastovo village
  • Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix): some individuals daily
  • Common Linnet (Linaria cannabina): some individuals in the fields close Lastovo village
  • European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris): some individuals in the fields close Lastovo village

Reptiles

  • Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis siculus): some individuals in Zaklopatica and Skrivena Luka
  • Dalmatian Wall Lizard (Podarcis melisselensis): some individuals in the fields close Lastovo village, Zaklopatica, Skrivena Luka and Pasadur
  • Sharp-snouted Rock Lizard (Lacerta oxycephala): 1 individual in Lastovo village and 1 in Pasadur with a gorgeous blue morph
  • European Glass Lizard (Pseudopus apodus): 1 roadkilled individual in the fields close Lastovo village
